In 1998, Melana was a Love Fund scholarship recipient for outstanding community service. Melana was also a Communication Theory/Human Relations major at Park University. As a student at Park, she was also a member of the Athletes in Action Christian Fellowship. In addition to all of this, Melana worked for NFL game production and on game days she interviewed fans at tailgates for the "Chiefs Trivia segment" on Arrow Vision (the stadium jumbo tron). She was sent "out into the tailgates" with a cameraman and a golf cart. She had an editor who put together the show which played right before the players are introduced. For three years, 1996, 1997, and 1998, Melana was a Kansas City Chief Cheerleader. She spoke at many D.A.R.E. graduations, signed autographs, not as a title holder, but this time as a chiefs cheerleader all over Kansas City. Being a Chief's Cheerleader afforded her the opportunity to travel and perform. In 1996 she traveled to Mexico when the Chiefs played the Cowboys, and in 1998 the Chiefs played the Packers in Tokyo, Japan.
What is your best memory of your year as a titleholder?
My year as a titleholder was filled with friendships and love, for Keylee Sue Sanders to John; I never missed out on any laughter. I'll never forget John driving Keylee and I to nationals in Wichita, we stopped at a Dairy Queen and he let us PIG OUT! It's the little things that I loved most. How has the experience benefited you today?
My pageant experience benefited me through many aspects in life. As a seventeen year old, I learned everything from highways (getting to appearances) to public speaking, which helped me become the youngest member of the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders at just eighteen years old.
